I haven't read any of these and I guess I probably won't now. My most disappointing read this year has been Katie Kitamura's AUDITION. I had such high hopes for it based on reviews and even the back of the book. But I just did not get it at all. Even after I heard her talk about it on NPR. So many people seemed to just be raving about this book. But, like, why? The sentences are pretty. But for me, there was nothing else. Genuinely baffled by the plot, by the structure, and by the folks who love this book.
thanks for booktalking!! I heard these exact criticisms about this book so I avoided. I had mixed feelings about the Empirium trilogy. I enjoyed parts of it, but I feel it went way overboard at the last one! Like how am i supposed to get behind the choices of the 'love interest' here and was confused and yeah, that one held way too many storylines and over like 1000 years or something too right?

well you may have a different take! reading is so subjective, and i know people who've enjoyed the same books i can't stand heh.
i haven't read AUDITION yet but its on my list. i've heard its one you have to 'get' so i guess i'll see if i'm up to snuff once i read!?
I haven't read any of these, but your criticisms are the kind of things that would bother me. So I'll be skipping them!
My biggest recent disappointment was A CROWN OF IVY AND GLASS by Claire Legrand. I had a lot of issues with it; here are a few:
- It's supposed to be an adult novel, but reads very YA. The main character, who's 20, acted more like 15.
- The main character was a selfish, shallow brat. She knew this, and sometimes even felt bad about it, but not bad enough to change it.
- Her relationship with her (also unlikable) love interest went from purely physical attraction to "I love you" instantly.
- There were too many plot lines introduced, so a lot of them ended up feeling underbaked, despite the book being 600 pages long.
I really like Legrand's Empirium trilogy, but I won't be continuing with this series.
